Best Exercise Datasets with Animations for Fitness Apps (2026)

RepDB, Vital Animations, GymVisual and MoveKit compared on transparent backgrounds, smooth motion and consistent characters, with sample findings.

A fitness app needs an animation library that looks like one product. A large exercise count will not fix a screen where characters change between workouts, background colours vary from card to card, or a repeated movement ends in an obvious jump.

For an app where the visual experience matters, my priorities are transparent backgrounds, smooth animations and one consistent character. These are the reasons I built RepDB. This article compares it with Vital Animations, GymVisual and MoveKit through that lens.

Disclosure: I build and sell RepDB. Product pages and public previews were checked on September 8, 2026. I inspected the Vital and MoveKit sample ZIPs, not their complete paid catalogues. Visual preferences below are my assessment; measured file properties are identified separately.

The three things to look for

Transparent backgrounds. The exercise should sit naturally on your app’s surface. A pale background baked into the video remains a rectangle on a dark card, and different pale tints become obvious when several exercises appear together.

Smooth animations. Watch complete repetitions, including the end-to-start transition. A file being labelled 30 fps or “loopable” does not establish smooth movement. The motion itself, timing and repeat boundary have to work at the size and speed your users will see.

One consistent character. Body proportions, face, clothing, materials and lighting should belong to the same visual system across workouts. Different exercise categories should not make your app look as though it switched asset suppliers.

These observations distinguish downloaded files, public previews and editorial judgments. They are not a numerical quality ranking of the complete catalogues. Source details and sample versions.

Vital Animations: several collections combined into one

The free pack demonstrates a substantial style change between categories. This is more than a different outfit on the same model:

If your app mixes these categories in one workout screen, the visual identity changes with the exercise. Selecting a single collection may reduce that problem, but the combined sample does not demonstrate one coherent character system.

GymVisual: a large catalogue, a dated look

GymVisual advertises a large catalogue, but I find its Basic Grey style dated and visually busy. The dark muscle outlines and heavy shading in this Weighted Crunch preview show why I prefer RepDB’s softer classic character for a modern fitness app.

MoveKit: muscle highlighting is missing across dozens of exercises

Missing muscle highlighting is my main concern with MoveKit. In my visual review of its public exercise previews, I saved 48 exercises with no visible muscle highlighting. They span bands, barbells, cables, dumbbells, kettlebells, bodyweight and machines, rather than one exercise category.

Examples include Band Hip Abduction, Dumbbell Incline Hammer Curl and Kettlebell Swing. In a workout screen, some exercises show the working muscles in colour while others leave the whole figure grey. If your app uses that colour as a visual cue, the cue disappears for those movements.

Background colours vary too. Compare the greyer Band Curl preview, the yellow-green cast in Band External Rotation, and the warmer Band Glute Bridge card. These baked-in backgrounds make the set harder to match to one app theme.

RepDB: one character, smooth motion, your background

RepDB’s animation library is built around a consistent classic character and smooth looping movements. The examples above let you judge the motion directly. Transparent source files let you keep the same artwork across light mode, dark mode and custom brand surfaces.

Four compact app screens, one transparent animated WebP (559 KB in this demo). The navigation, cards, metrics, accents, and surface can all change without exporting a new version of the exercise.

The character stays the same while the surrounding interface changes. There is no baked white, greenish or pinkish rectangle to match. That makes transparency useful throughout an app, rather than just on a product screenshot.

RepDB currently contains 608 exercises: 496 with motion clips and 112 static holds supplied as stills. Standard includes the transparent motion assets; Starter does not include motion. The bundle also provides JSON and SQLite, exercise relationships and translations.

Standard costs $499. It does not match GymVisual’s advertised breadth or Vital’s entry price. It supplies animated WebP rather than ready-made MP4 or an editable rig; the WebP-to-MP4 guide covers video delivery when needed. Test playback on your target devices.

The premium sample uses CC BY-NC 4.0 with attribution, including evaluation inside a commercial organization. Commercial production use requires the appropriate paid license. MoveKit’s two-exercise sample instead permits commercial use under its published agreement.

Prices were checked on September 8; MoveKit localizes checkout currencies. Catalogue figures use each vendor’s counting method. RepDB’s motion count refers to exercise records, and close variants can share a clip.

The reviewed RepDB, GymVisual and MoveKit legal texts identify an individual operator. Vital’s EULA, version 2026.1, names Vital Animations as counterparty without identifying an individual or registered entity in that document. This reports the document’s content, not its enforceability. RepDB’s full commercial license is available before purchase.

My recommendation

For a fitness app where the animations are a visible part of the product, I would prioritize a consistent character, smooth repetitions and transparent backgrounds over the largest advertised count.

RepDB is my choice for that combination. GymVisual’s breadth may justify a different visual style when you need specialized coverage. Vital is cheaper to enter, but its combined collection needs a careful style check. MoveKit’s missing muscle highlighting across dozens of public previews and varying backgrounds are its main drawbacks for a consistent workout screen.
